Leadership in Top Companies: BOSS vs LEADER mentality
Recently, I observed a discussion on leadership in top companies. The prevailing viewpoint was that if your team doesn’t align with your goals or share your vision, it might be best to dismiss them and hire new individuals who are on board from the start. While I understand this perspective to a certain extent, it does not resonate well with me.
Boss vs. Leader Mentality…The distinction between a boss and a leader is significant. A boss dictates terms, threatening dismissal if expectations aren’t met. In contrast, a leader seeks to inspire the team to willingly support and pursue the set goals and vision. The easy route may be to fire and replace team members, but this approach overlooks the investment made in them.
The Importance of Integration…When you prepare and integrate people into your company, you invest resources such as time and finances. If they don’t initially follow your vision, it’s often due to a lack of understanding. As a leader, it’s your responsibility to convey the ideas clearly to overcome the fear of the unknown. With proper explanation, team members will naturally support your new goals.
Relying on hiring new people to meet expectations is a trap that many so-called efficient leaders fall into. This mentality is prevalent in top companies globally and needs reassessment. Firing should be a last resort. Instead, leaders should focus on helping their team understand and feel confident in the vision. When presenting ambitious goals, it is normal for team members to feel intimidated or see it as an increased workload. Embracing their opposition allows you to refine your strategy and ensure everyone feels involved. This exchange of ideas can elevate the entire vision to a new level.
Building Team Spirit…Avoid being a boss; be a leader. When your team hesitates to jump into your ambitious plans, stay calm and explain the steps clearly. If you’re unsure about certain aspects, admit it and frame the vision as a collective effort. This approach strengthens team spirit and makes individuals feel valued and responsible for the outcome.
The Pursuit of Purpose…Many employees function like small cogs in a machine, feeling devoid of purpose or contribution. By fostering a sense of purpose and responsibility, teams operate more smoothly.
That’s my takeaway on leadership for today.
